BMR Thermal Inc. Supplies Major Equipment for New Central Heating Plant at UMASS Amherst

Download as PDF

The existing heating plant at the University of Massachusetts, Amherst was built in the 1940’s and has been in need of modernization for decades. The seven boilers in this plant, representing a total steam output capacity of 462,000 Lbs/Hr will be demolished and replaced with a complete new central heating facility.

The project, which began as a study in 1987, will include one 10MW Combustion Gas turbine with Heat Recovery Steam Generator capable of 100,000 PPH of steam and four Package boilers rated at 125,000 PPH each.

After many rounds of bidding, answering questions and re-bidding, BMR Thermal, representing Rentech Boiler Systems has been successful in winning the initial engineering phase contract for the HRSG and Package Boilers for the project. Included in the packages will be low NOx burners and duct burner equipment by a major manufacturer. The plant will be able to boast extremely low emission levels, in part by utilizing low NOx combustors in the gas turbine and the HRSG emissions will be further reduced by utilizing selective catalytic reduction (SCR) systems and oxidation catalyst to be supplied by Peerless MFG. Co. The package boilers will also include Peerless SCR Systems for NOx and CO reduction.
